Dear Parents,
Your child is currently in the Speech-Language Program working toward developing more accurate production of speech sounds. In an effort to assist your child in achieving his/her goal(s), please encourage consistent home practice throughout the school year.
Each week your child will bring home a speech practice assignment. The format of each assignment will vary, although each one will include a brief list of target words that your child should practice each week. The majority of words will be high-frequency, which means that they are often spoken within the classroom setting. These types of words will make practice relevant to your child and will help to enforce his/her literacy skills in the areas of speaking, reading, and spelling.
The words should be practiced on a daily basis so that your child becomes consistent in producing the sounds correctly at home. Daily practice should be quick and easy (5-10 minutes). It will be the most beneficial to your child to practice each day for a few minutes. This consistency of practice will help your child to transfer his/her skills to conversational speech at a quicker rate.
Each assignment must be practiced orally and should involve communication between you and your child. Please remind your child to check his/her speech folder each day to take out the weekly home practice activity. Feel free to make the activities fun and encourage your child to be creative in using the practice words within his/her communication. The attached handout gives you additional ideas for ways to help your child practice speech.
Please sign your child’s home practice sheets so that I know your child has practiced throughout the week. I will provide incentives to your child for the completion of these activities, which will motivate him/her to continue practicing. Feel free to write down comments and/or questions about your child’s speech assignments for me. I will return each assignment to you (on the right side of your child’s speech folder) so that you can keep each activity, should you choose to use them for future practice.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s speech.
Thank you for your support!
