Dear Parents,
According to a wise principal, Evelyn K. Moore, “the key element in the kind of parent involvement that benefits children is a sense of partnership between parents and school: an understanding that it takes both to achieve positive outcomes for children” (1991). I strongly agree with this statement and I want to assure you that you, as parents, can have a significant influence on the language development of your child on a daily basis, through the conversations and interactions that take place in the home.
I highly encourage you, as parents, to engage your child in daily conversations and reading activities. These activities will provide your child with chances to acquire new vocabulary, grammar, conceptual knowledge, and higher-level cognitive skills (e.g. problem solving & inferential thinking). There is a wonderful resource written by Harvey Wiener, called Talk With Your Child, which provides information about how to facilitate discussions with your child about daily events. It also contains an extended list of children’s books that can serve as a basis for high quality discussions with your child.
I may periodically send home language-based activities in your child’s speech folder, which will provide you and your child with opportunities to engage in activities that foster listening comprehension and oral expression. Each home activity will be brief and will often revolve around a motivating game format.
Please sign off on your child’s activities in the designated spot so that I can reward him/her for turning it in. Also, feel free to write down any comments and/or questions about each assignment for me to review, as a way to communicate with me. Thank you for your support in helping your child reach his/her goals.
Sincerely,
Laura Geller, M.A., CCC-SLP
